Cargo Fire Initiative selects ScanReach for Maritime Safety Advancement in Container Ship Cargo Holds

news-details

Safetytech Accelerator, in collaboration with Anchor Partners, Evergreen, Ocean Network Express (ONE), and Seaspan Corporation in the Cargo Fire & Loss Innovation Initiative (CFLII), is pleased to announce ScanReach as the second technology provider selected for the evaluation of its innovative technology aimed at ‘early-stage fire detection in cargo holds of containerships’.

Launched in February 2023 by Safetytech Accelerator, CFLII, brings together industry leaders, technology innovators, and maritime stakeholders to advance technologies that mitigate large-scale cargo fire, loss, and damage at sea. Aligned with the objective of enhancing shipping’s reputation as a safe, reliable, efficient, and environmentally responsible link in the global supply chain, CFLII currently includes leading shipping companies and maritime insurers as its Anchor Partners. To date CFLII identified and assessed innovative cargo monitoring tech with a focus on early fire detection. After evaluating 200+ companies, Safetytech Accelerator selected 13, and ScanReach is the second invited for evaluation by the Initiative, featuring feasibility studies and pilot programs with CFLII Anchor Partners.

ScanReach’s Advanced Sensor Mesh Technology

ScanReach introduces a unique sensor mesh technology, enabling wireless data transfer and connectivity in complex steel environments. This breakthrough enhances safety on vessels and rigs by overcoming challenges in maritime digitisation. The technology enables the deployment of a wide variety of sensor types, from air temperature to gas monitoring, meaning ships can be adaptive to different risks and operational challenges.  The initial phase of the evaluation will focus around demonstrating both its suitability for cargo holds alongside the deployment of air temperature probes in the hold.  It’s anticipated that further sensor types will then be assessed and deployed into the established network.

‘We are delighted to be selected amongst the industry providers and look forward to working together to solve significant industry challenges. Container fire detection is of immense importance but by its very nature, is a challenge to detect early and successfully. It is extremely encouraging to see the industry applying innovative technology to new applications to solve such complex issues. We are excited to be part of this exciting initiative, combining our unique multi-layered sensor approach and wireless connectivity, to help drive safety within our industry forward with innovative fire detection solutions’ Dan Slater – VP Sales & Business Development at ScanReach

The evaluation

CFLII adopts an agile and highly collaborative approach to evaluate innovative technologies. The evaluation of ScanReach’s technology to support distributed sensor networks is now underway through a structured feasibility study involving vessel assessment & survey leading to the planning and costing of deployment.  If successful, this will be followed by trials on one or more of the Anchor Partner’s cargo ships.

“The Cargo Fire & Loss Innovation Initiative (CFLII), led by Safetytech Accelerator, stands at the forefront of advancing maritime safety. With ScanReach being selected by the Initiative Anchor Partners, we’re thrilled to bring innovative solutions to the challenging realm of early-stage fire detection in container ship cargo holds. This collaboration reflects Safetytech Accelerator’s commitment to fostering cutting-edge technology to enhance maritime industry’s safety, sustainability and efficiency.”  Rich McLoughlin, CFLII Programme Director
